If it feels like you have not watched the Premier League in a while, that is because you have not. In fact, proposals existed that there would be no Premier League until October, making it a month without the English top flight.
For six teams, that is the case. There are three games, Manchester United-Leeds, Brighton-Crystal Palace and a highly coveted Chelsea-Liverpool that are postponed due to situations regarding The Queen’s funeral.
Regardless, there are still seven games on the schedule for Premier League fans. However, after that, there is the September international break. The hiatus lasts two weeks as international teams play two or three games.
The highlight of the abbreviated schedule this weekend in the Premier League is up for debate. There is not one game that truly jumps out. Yet, a number of games are quietly intriguing.
There are two games on Friday to get the weekend started. Villa hosts Southampton at the same time two promoted teams, Nottingham Forest and Fulham, battle.
The following day, Tottenham hosts a struggling Leicester City to cap off three games on the schedule. Tottenham is unpredictable. A 2-0 loss in the Champions League is the most recent result. Anyhow, Spurs sit in third after six games, while Leicester still seek its first win of the season.
Sunday also brings a pair of interesting games. It is a 7 a.m. kickoff between Brentford and Arsenal. The two London clubs want to continue decent starts to the season. Brentford’s Community Stadium has not been kind to visitors this season.
Finally, Everton and West Ham face off in the finale of the weekend from Goodison Park.
NBC coverage
There is surely much to talk about among the NBC crew, which consists of Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Mustoe and Tim Howard on Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s coverage keeps Mustoe, but brings in Ahmed Fareed and Danny Higginbotham.
Games this weekend are spread out, to say the least. The only overlap in schedule comes on the two games on Friday. Therefore, there is no Goal Rush, as there is no need to bounce around between games. Effectively, it is the antithesis of Championship Sunday, where all 20 teams play at the same time.
Be sure to watch the Premier League in 4K, if possible. This weekend, there is just one 4K game. Wolves hosts Manchester City in 4K, with kickoff set for 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Having suffered through Pien’s hamfisted, raucous commentary on Sat during the Newcastle game, I was extremely disappointed to get up early to watch Chelsea Women open the WSL on Sunday morning to be greeted by Mien’s non-dulcet tones. Here she didn’t have the benefit of Warnock alongside her and her limitations were exposed for all to hear. She had no explanation for Chelsea’s best player, Harder, being withdrawn just before the match; she had no idea about the tactics being deployed by either side, couldn’t identify many of players until the numbers on the backs of their shirts were displayed; and was in general her usual amateurish self, bereft of humor and insight.
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk has proved herself to be an accomplished commentator on the BBC, and Jacqui Oakley isn’t far behind. Does Pien live in the north of England and therefore could more easily travel to Newcastle and Liverpool? She really is quite dreadful.

For those of you who object to female commentators, you really should aim your dislike at American commentators covering English football matches. There is truly nothing worse. I presume Fox will destroy the World Cup with Americans. And I am half-American.

I’m with you. No problem here with Americans calling American sports, or even international sports where Americans are playing, but European football or international football is different. The accent isn’t a problem, but it’s a pitch, not a field; the man or woman guarding the net is a keeper, not a goalie…. Penalty kicks are not PKs and “nil” is a word.
These kind of things are why NBC has been successful importing the EPL to to the US, I think. Respect the norms.

I suspect many here hope to effect change, that if Pien is found to be so universally shrill and objectionable week after week and not seen to be improving perhaps the Sky and Comcast decision makers may select Jacqui Oatley or Courtney Sweetman-Kirk for the token female slot, they are both quite good and wouldn’t rankle anywhere near Pien levels.

I find her no worse than any generic male announcer. She did one of the Champions League matches this week, Copenhagen v Sevilla, and she was fine. Let the game flow, didn’t talk too much…same as the last couple of EPL matches I’ve heard her do.
The piling on and comments like “token female slot” give a lot away. There’s a fair amount of people here who just do not like women announcers for men’s football. There is no equivalent piling on for any one male announcer (maybe there was for Arlo). At a certain point the sexism is what it is.

Btw, I have no opinion of Pien, but my goodness – it’s a weekly lashing and it’s childish. Same with Arlo White before. I guess it’s cool to be negative and extremely critical of someone. Is it possible that Pien M is quite popular with viewers in Britain?
She’s not to my taste either, but I think maybe over there they are more used to women covering sports (or “sport” as they would say). Eleanor Aldroid has been covering cricket for the BBC for like 20 years and is a celebrity there.
I still think the commentators Fox will foist on us during the World Cup, many calling from the US watching monitors, will be worse.

Am I correct in this: because the Newcastle game is at 3pm, and is the only 3pm game, does that mean it is blacked out in the UK and not televised live there? So it is Sky and Comcast going out of their way to hire Pien for this and in the UK it will only be made available cut and snipped as highlights?
And as a result of this Sky/Comcast loyalty to Pien the rest of the world except for Ireland has to suffer?
