EPL commentator schedule: September 3 and 4

The dust from the transfer deadline day settles and there are only a few things that are certain. Arsenal sit atop the league with a perfect record. Erling Haaland is ripping apart the Premier League. Leicester City and Aston Villa are in worrying times.

Whatever team you support, there is excitement around every corner in the Premier League, for better or for worse.

Matchday six is no different.

The most heated of these games is the Merseyside Derby. Goodison Park is the host for a Liverpool side that grabbed a dramatic last-kick winner against Newcastle United midweek. Neither side is off to a perfect start. Everton is towards the bottom of the table, and Liverpool is five points behind Manchester City and seven behind Arsenal. It is early, but these are already important points.

Arsenal, for its part, has its toughest test of the season to date. It travels north to Manchester to take on a resurgent Red Devils, who picked up a second-consecutive 1-0 win away from Old Trafford. This is a historic rivalry as both teams look to build on their recent string of results. Fittingly, it is the finale of the weekend.

In between those two games that are at the extremes of the weekend docket, the Chelsea-West Ham game is one to keep an eye on. Both sides are, by their respective aspirations, struggling. Chelsea and West Ham made splashed at the transfer deadline to shore up loose ends offensively. Despite strong seasons in 2021/22, both currently are falling behind their rivals at the top.

NBC coverage this weekend

Premier League Morning, Premier League Live and Goal Zone are the usual buffer programs surrounding all 10 games this weekend. Rebecca Lowe is joined by Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe this weekend.

Goal Rush takes care of a loaded 10 a.m. kickoff window on Saturday. At that time, there are six games scheduled concurrently. Goal Rush, available solely through Peacock Premium, covers all the goals and highlights from around the grounds.

Also, keep an eye out for the games in 4K this weekend. You do need a certain satellite or streaming option to watch games in 4K. Plus, only certain TVs, phones or other means of watching the game can carry the higher resolution. Make sure you have the right access to stream Premier League games in 4K.

Always enjoy when Steve Wilson is on the call… and if you prefer Arlo White to Peter Drury I have to question your judgment

    • SaintsFan

      September 4, 2022 at 12:47 pm

The answer would be ‘great judgement’. Arlo & Dixon are (were…) 100 times more listenable than robot Drury and his ‘Utd have a new pinup boy’ type commentary. Absolutely cringeworthy.

        I agree with you SaintsFan

Nothing against Proudfoot & Holland, who are good (Villa v Man City, on now on NBC) but it does seem odd that the main broadcast network match isn’t using its own team. Except for when he was filling in for Rebecca during maternity leave or Olympic duty, Arlo was always the voice of NBC on the broadcast network, right? Maybe Peter Drury is at a family wedding or something.

For nostalgic geeks, Fox’s Gus Johnson ruined a perfectly good Purdue vs Penn St college football game yesterday. The only soccer commentator to go into screaming fake extasy over a mid field throw in.

Not a comment on EPL announcers but a suggestion…I like to see the matches people are interested in watching each week, but they get fragmented across various stories, some old stories, so they don’t pop up in the “recent comments” list.

How about turning Kyle’s weekly “games to watch” tweet & video into a post, and encourage readers to chime in with their tips? That way each week is a new story and it would be easier to see reader picks there than to wade thru old comments in multiple stories. And Kartik & Chris, you could post your picks there too.

Great idea, Greg. Kyle was planning on posting the video on the site yesterday, but we ran out of time after completing a bunch of other articles and tasks. We’ll try our best to do it next Friday and moving forward.

Once again, a plea to WST to name the world feed commentators, particularly the games in 4K. You helpfully tell us which games are being broadcast in 4K, but not the guys behind the microphones.

    • Ron

      September 3, 2022 at 10:28 am

Aside from Man. Utd v Arsenal the commentators will be those listed

Jim Proudfoot & Jim Beglin will be heard by 4K viewers on that one

Regardless who is commentating, tomorrow is Derby Day all over: Liverpool v Everton, Celtic v Rangers, Inter v Milan, and a couple of minor London derbies. Good day.

This weekend, if you live in many parts of the US, you can get lawful, live access to 8 or 9 of the 10 EPL games with Peacock Premium and a good antenna:
    .
    * Six 10am Saturday games via Goal Rush on Peacock Premium (can get 5 of 6 standalone)
    * 12:30 Saturday game OTA NBC or Peacock Premium
    * Both Sunday games OTA Telemundo
    .
Not everyone enjoys Goal Rush or Spanish. But it seems pretty solid for many EPL fans who have eschewed bundled pay TV
    .
Has anyone checked if Telemundo EPL games are live on Peacock in Spanish (like Chivas home games and World Cup plan)? Does Sling Latino $10 per month plan (which has Universo) give access to Telemundo/Universo EPL games on Telemundo Deportes app?

    • Streaming mess

      September 2, 2022 at 4:03 pm

      @Dave:

Unless you subscribe to a pay TV package with Telemundo’s NATIONAL FEEDS, PL matches on Telemundo are NOT available via the Telemundo Deportes App.

I have DIRECTV and I get a Telemundo local affiliate in my predominately English-language programming bundle (but NOT the Telemundo national feed, which is only available in predominately Spanish-language programming bundles) and I CANNOT stream those PL matches on Telemundo via the Telemundo Deportes App.

Because DIRECTV offer Universo in predominately English-language programming bundles, I can stream PL matches on Universo via the Telemundo Deportes App.

Men’s Chivas Guadalajara home matches in Liga MX are different, as they are no longer available in Spanish via the Telemundo Deportes App. The Spanish-language broadcasts can only be streamed via Peacock Premium US. As for English-language broadcasts of men’s Chivas homes matches, they can be streamed via the Telemundo Deportes App for those who subscribe to a predominate Spanish-language pay TV bundle containing the Telemundo NATIONAL FEED (but not for those who subscribe to a pay TV bundle with a Telemundo local affiliate.)

        September 2, 2022 at 4:43 pm

Thank you for the details! I have been curious why Telemundo Deportes app experiences are so variable depending on user and game. Seems “streaming mess” is a fair summary. Bizarrely, I get Telemundo in my English bundle but not in my Spanish bundle. I appreciate the insight on how that impacts access to Telemundo Deportes app

A Pien-free weekend. There is justice.
I see Drury will be homing for Man Utd. Glad to at least have Lee Dixon mitigating Drury’s verbal sap.

    • Ron

      September 2, 2022 at 6:08 pm

Pien is covering a live EFL match for Sky

    • Jon

      September 3, 2022 at 12:36 am

Drury’s verbal sap. That’s a great description of his wordy, tired, scripted routine. Lee Dixon does freshen it up with some sharp insights. And hooray for no Pien!

    • Tony

      September 3, 2022 at 7:44 am

      Yes !!!!!!!! 🙂 …………………….But we have Jacqui Oatley 🙁

      • John

        September 3, 2022 at 12:12 pm

I don’t mind Jacqui at all, whatever matches she’s calling. Speaking of talented women in the booth, I miss hearing Mary Carillo at the US Open tennis since it’s been on ESPN. She would have been great with McEnroe calling those Serena final matches, and she’s great when it’s a big men’s match too

No Drury on Saturday. NBC are already regretting choosing him!

Arlo and Lee Dixon had such a good chemistry. That’s all been lost. Drury has zero personality.

    • Bring Back Fox Soccer Plus and Setanta for $15.99 per month!

      September 2, 2022 at 1:50 pm

I’m sure Lee really misses Arlo talking for the first 2 minutes of each match before letting him speak.

I’ve been delighted by Mr. Drury’s commentary. I enjoyed him when he was on the World Feed, and it’s been great to have him with NBC.

      • MarkB

        September 2, 2022 at 3:35 pm

I can’t speak for Lee Dixon, but I definitely do not miss Arlo’s “sugared up 10 year old” commentary.

    • Tony

      September 3, 2022 at 7:46 am

      I agree 100%

  10. John

    September 2, 2022 at 1:06 pm

Assuming this is accurate, neither Drury, Dixon or Le Saux are working for NBC on Saturday?

    • Mr. Gol

      September 2, 2022 at 1:14 pm

      @John:

      That appears to be correct.

The only English-language commentators NBC will hire on Saturday are Andrés Cantor and Danny Higginbotham, commentating Wolves v Southampton off monitor, for Peacock Premium (US).

      • SaintsFan

        September 2, 2022 at 3:23 pm

OK – got to ask. What is this ‘off monitor’ commentary and how can we hear it instead of the female commentator listed above for Wolves v Saints?

        • SaintsFan

          September 2, 2022 at 3:25 pm

Sorry Mr. Goal – just seen your comment below. I hope you are the one who is correct here!

        • greg

          September 3, 2022 at 2:11 am

          “…instead of the female commentator”

FFS, the sexism here…Oatley is quite good, knows the game. Do you know anything about her or are you just upset to hear a woman calling a men’s match?

          • John

            September 6, 2022 at 1:25 pm

Even though probably no one will see this reply, thanks Greg for posting it- nicely done. I think there is a minority of guys here and across other sports who resent or even loathe what they perceive as women commentators and hosts “invading” sports coverage. I’ve heard this from some family and friends, and sometimes bite my tongue and just say something bland like “she seems to know her stuff and worked hard to get there” or whatever.

How about telling us which games are the Goal Rush games, Kyle, it would save several hundred of us trying to Google to find out?

    • Goal Rush

      September 2, 2022 at 1:07 pm

      @SteveK:

Chelsea v West Ham will be the Goal Rush match.

      • SteveK

        September 2, 2022 at 1:12 pm

        Many thanks GR…

      • Dano

        September 2, 2022 at 5:25 pm

According to Fubo TV Canada’s Premier League TV channel guide Tottenham v Fulham is the Goal Rush match

    September 2, 2022 at 12:19 pm

Yeah I am so excited Banyard is back. Hopefully is start of many for him.

Proudfoot & Beglin world feeding on Manchester United v Arsenal

    • Mr. Gol

      September 2, 2022 at 1:01 pm

      Notice one typo already:

Peacock Premium (US) will use Andrés Cantor & Danny Higginbotham (off monitor) instead of world feed for Wolves v Southampton.

That was announced by NBC on Tuesday.

      Did something change?

      • cmasia

        September 4, 2022 at 8:19 pm

For those who think we gang up on the truly terrible Pien because she’s a woman…..

I’ll take Jacqui Oatley any time.

I’ll take her over the drama king, Conor McNamara every time.

        • greg

          September 5, 2022 at 4:50 am

A few guys here have said they don’t like women calling men’s matches. And some guys don’t say it but do complain about every woman calling a men’s match. So maybe not all guys, but when the shoe fits…

And agree on Oatley, she’s good…better than a lot of men calling matches.

Speaking of histrionic men calling sports, there’s a clip on twitter of Arlo calling the end of a playoff match this weekend, in the sportwashing golf thing he works for. Total Arlogasmic call…dude is on-brand whatever he calls.
