Fans of the Premier League see September as when the clouds start to settle for the season. The closure of the transfer market, teams starting to find their rhythm and the table spreads out. Some teams still have more questions than answers, and the first batch of midweek games expedites the pressure.
A number of players put out stellar performances in matchday four. Erling Haaland grabbed a hat trick in Manchester City’s comeback against Crystal Palace. Roberto Firmino lit up Bournemouth for a pair of goals and a hat trick of assists.
Now with depth playing more of a role due to increased fixtures, the going gets tougher for those at the top. For league leaders Arsenal, a disappointing Aston Villa side travels to North London. Steven Gerrard has one win in four games this season, with Aston Villa struggling against less-than-great opposition.
Other London clubs include West Ham and Tottenham, who battle on Wednesday afternoon. West Ham picked up a crucial win this past weekend against the aforementioned Aston Villa to get off the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Tottenham rolled on with a win against Nottingham Forest courtesy of a Harry Kane brace.
Finally, Leicester City, which now sits at the bottom of the table, takes on a Manchester United coming off a second-consecutive win. Leicester City’s struggles come at a time when players are departing, showing the situation is going from bad to worse at the King Power.
As things stay, the packed schedule will continue with the Premier League season taking over a month off. These early season games before the fatigue sets in are especially important in 2022/23. Teams need to secure points where they can get them.

Two of the games midweek are available in 4K. Those are the Leeds-Everton contest and the Liverpool game against Newcastle. To watch games in 4K, you need the right subscription and the right hardware. I believe someone said last week the Peter Drury was a Man. U. homer. He started today game saying, “they have returned to their natural station in life”. B.S. to that with all the terrible games over the last couple of years. But being one of the richest teams, they can and did buy there way back up the latter.

Todays Man UTD vs Leic game was the first in a long time when I thought the commentator was a fan of one team with constant comments during the game praising just one team …..Man UTD .

Goal Rush is great but why are they giving us 15 mins of ‘filler stuff’ during HT in the Lpool v Newcastle game?
They started with the Man City v Forest game. Why not go back to that during half time? You never know – Forest could score 5 goals in these 15 mins…

This is Pien’s first PLP game of the season, her other appearances on the world feed were via Sky Sports Match Choice commentary.
Match Choice is the banner under which Sky exploit their delayed rights which to all the matches that are not shown live in the UK, they crew all the commentaries for those (PLP takes this commentary for the world feed) and share match coverage with the BBC who own the highlights rights.
There is no Match Choice this midweek because all of the matches are being covered live domestically by BT Sport.
Some of the Match Choice regulars are being used by PLP this week but, for example, you are extremely unlikely to hear Chris Wise at 3pm Saturday as he is not on the Sky roster. He is a regular at IMG (who are the company behind PLP), doing various commentaries and voiceovers.
I would imagine Jacqui Oatley will be back on the Match Choice scene (she works for Sky, not PLP) once the Women’s Super League season begins in September.

I’ve been driving this afternoon and listening to the Leeds v Everton game in my car via BBC Sounds, their station Radio 5. I recommend that coverage too. On Saturdays and Sundays, they broadcast several games and always have live updates of goals from others

Yes, this make sense. Chris Wise is one of the BBC’s freelancers so he usually does a 3:00 Saturday (or an early Sunday game) for one of Five Live (radio PBP), Five Live/Final Score TV show (reporting/post-game interviews) or BBC television (highlights).
When BT or Amazon televises a full round of games domestically (currently they each have two such rounds per season), this is when you will hear less typical commentators on the world feed since IMG/PLP has to produce it themselves (and the fact of all 10 games being televised means those domestic networks will also need/use more announcers than are needed in a typical 4-5 televised match weekend round).

Ron, I just want you to know that many of us here appreciate your information, when you mentioned in another thread that it was Sky who hired all the commentators for games that aren’t on live TV in the UK I realized it was Comcast/Sky selecting and shoving Pien down our throats for those blacked out 3PM games. That Pien would never be chosen for an actual live mens Premier League game televised in the UK. Just as I was feeling so sure of this here you go and blow my hypothesis because Pien was picked by PLP for BTSport, presumably willingly, for Arsenal, so she is not just propped up by Comcast/Sky. Our only hope is someone with actual power realizes that the Pien game should always be chosen for Goal Rush.

I had the two screen thing going yesterday and with USA pregame on one I was able to notice that Goal Rush started early, the Matchday Live crew were in their new studio including someone who I find a wonderful pundit, Lianne Sanderson, and this was not blacked out. I almost hesitate mentioning it here for fear this loophole will be closed, but Goal Rush stayed with this at halftime, again not blacked out.

Easiest is to google “Goal Rush Optus Sport” and the second link should be “Live & Upcoming – Optus Sport.” Click this and it shows what optus is streaming now and in the future, clock the goal rush and it will have details on the match playing. Next week is Tottenham v. Fulham, for example.

I’m a long suffering West Ham fan who had to suffer being Piened Sunday.
Much to my surprise, she wasn’t as bad as usual.
When the game ended, I realized why.
Nothing happened in that match. Absolutely nothing. The goal was a fluke deflection, and that was the extent of the “action”
Even Pien was at a loss for words.
I doubt Arsenal and Villa fans will be as lucky Wednesday.
PS: Poor Villa fans… Being Piened twice in 4 days.

Does anyone have thoughts on why the NBC coverage keeps the crowd noise so quiet compared to UK telly? Sky and BT keep the crowd noise up which makes the atmosphere much better, but NBC turns it down. Do you think that they think that American audiences want it to be more calm? Are they afraid of naughty chants?
