There are just six games remaining for most Premier League teams. Although, some have seven games left like Everton or Chelsea. Then, some have just five left, like a struggling Manchester United or West Ham.
The differences in games only adds to the plotlines as the season’s end nears. Starting with the big one, the EPL title race appears to be coming down to the wire. Manchester City holds a one-point edge over Liverpool with the sides level on games played.
This weekend, both sides have fairly straight forward games. First off, Manchester City hosts a Watford side all but assured of relegation. Liverpool takes on Everton in the Merseyside Derby. While it is not a major game in terms of each team’s form, both sides have major stakes at hand. Remember, Everton is entrenched in the relegation scrap just a point above 18th-spot Burnley.
For European qualification, there are two massive games. Arsenal hosts Manchester Untied at the Emirates. Arsenal’s midweek win over Chelsea worked wonders for its Champions League charge. On the other hand, Manchester United continues to limp into the end of the season, coming off a 4-0 battering from Liverpool.
Another game to keep an eye on is West Ham traveling to London rival Chelsea. West Ham is not the same side that sat in the top four earlier in the season. Yet, at the same time, Chelsea looks to be open for the taking. Chelsea lost its last three home games in all competitions while conceding 11 to scoring just four. Chelsea retains its third-place spot, and it should be secure in that position. However, the five teams trailing Chelsea have everything at stake.
NBC coverage this weekend
The 10 games this weekend are fairly spread out. With Premier League Mornings kicking off the coverage at 7 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, Premier League Live provides context for the mid-day slate. Goal Zone wraps up each game.
There is no Goal Rush on NBC’s schedule this weekend. There are just three games during both the Saturday at 10 a.m. window and the Sunday at 9 a.m. window.
There are two Premier League games in 4K this weekend. The first of those is the Manchester United game against Arsenal on Saturday morning. Then, on Sunday, the Merseyside Derby is also available in 4K.

He’s a legend but I wouldn’t mind if Martin Tyler was replaced as the Monday night commentator. He spends the entire game from beginning to end spluttering with laughter at every comment he makes—things as routine as someone putting in a tackle. He didn’t used to do it as recently as five years ago—I wonder if it is characteristic of an older person (and how the brain changes).

Like Ted The Teddy Bear said – I want to make a bed from your voice and sleep on it, that would be Martin Tyler’s soothing voice. Not to mention the expertise. Yet, in the same chain we talk about someone of Pien’s caliber? Is everything else in the world generally declining to mediocrity and even below it?

Fair enough and I can appreciate that. I am not a fan of Pien by any means. That voice IS hard to listen to! Although like many I suppose, my ears are partial and long trained to appeal to a solid male voice for play-by-play in most sports. Similar to the ol’ days of radio with disc jockeys.

I have mostly followed Liga MX, NWSL, and international play this season, but a good EPL relegation battle always seems to draw me in.

I found the announcers on Burnley-Wolves to be fine. Easy to ignore background noise during dull stretches. Appropriate changes in volume and pacing for “look up and pay attention” moments. Plenty of banalities and filler, as in many sports broadcasts, but easily cleared my “acceptable” threshold. Just a data point that differs from the commenter consensus.

Excellent array of comments on this week’s lineup of commentators, especially about the women behind the mics. Sorry not to have Peter Drury for my telecast.
On another note, while I enjoy Jim Proudfoot’s play-by-play, I could do without his obvious scripted opening lines. He must stay up the night before writing what he thinks will be clever play on words but are usually trite and corny. He teams well with Jim Beglin.
Jon Champion is the best. And I miss Alan Perry. Not sure if he still does broadcasts, but in Texas I never hear him. I love it when he says, “Ooof!”

Some lab scientist should do an experiment to see what is more physically painful to a human being, the screech of Pia Meulensteen or the sustained, intense hissing sounds Paul Walker makes on English Championship broadcasts. I wouldn’t volunteer for the study! The frustrating thing is that Walker would be a good broadcaster if he didn’t make all the ridiculous hissing and heavy breathing noises (he’s got a good voice).

Imagine if ESPN won the PL rights, you’d have Taylor Twellman doing commentary, making it all about himself rather than the game. We wouldn’t even get the world feed with ESPN. I’m not defending Pien Meulensteen but it could be worse, much worse. I’m sure ESPN would have hire JP Dellacamera, imagine that nightmare. Ms. Meulensteen is on the world feed which means she’s heard worldwide, not only in the USA. I wonder if people around the world are complaining about her or is it only the American audience.

Please spare us Pien, if a female commentator is needed, surely there has to be one with a pleasant voice and basic knowledge. Secondly – Andy Walker, a.k.a. Andy Capp, spent the whole Man City – Watford game butting heads with Gary Weaver over the correct pronunciation of “Gabriel Jesus”. Seemed like Gary desperately tried to correct Andy Capp each and every time – no luck, Capp simply refused to be forced to say “Zhezus” but insisted on “Dzeezus”. How is this man still allowed to remain on staff??

Wish they’d sort the sound out. Watching Arsenal v Man Utd and it’s single channel (no surround) and you can barely hear the crowd at all.
Of course – once the half finishes and the commercials come on – full channel sound miraculously returns.
If they are doing it deliberately to minimize the chance of someone getting offended by a rude word shouted by the crowd then NBC should never have been given the contract. Absolutely clueless.

I don’t subscribe to anything with the 4K option and think I’d stick to the poor crowd sound rather than having to suffer Drury!
Interesting though. Definitely seems to be poor sound when NBC override the world feed. It’s like they aren’t at the game – but they are. Hopefully they’ll sort it out (one day…).

Just like to add another data point, watched Arsenal ManU through the Apple TV and agree that the audio mix very heavily pushed the guys in the booth forward and suppressed the crowd noise too much.

I would much prefer Jacqui Oatley to Pien Meulensteen, as Jacqui hs a great knowledge of the game and has a nice voice for the call as well. She also knows when not to talk and she doesn’t say too much, and she talks well with her co-commentators. Cannot say the same about Pien unfortunately.

Jacqui was perfectly fine in the Watford v Brentford game, although shouting “Louza” at the luckless Watford midfielder seemed harsh. On the other hand Pien Meulensteen has got to be the worst thing to happen to EPL broadcasts in years. A game ruiner.
