The title race between Liverpool and Manchester City is one thing. However, equally enthralling is the battle for Champions League or Europa League qualification.
As things stand, City, Liverpool and Chelsea look to have the top-three spots wrapped up. However, there are five teams within seven points of each other just behind Chelsea. Additionally, those games are made all the more complex due to the fact that some teams, like Manchester United or West Ham, played more games than clubs like Arsenal.
The game of the weekend, with major implications for the title and the Champions league, is between United and City in the Manchester Derby. The ‘noisy neighbors’ of City have a stranglehold on this derby over recent years. However, in the last seven games between the two at the Etihad, United has five wins to City’s one.
United has games against Liverpool, Tottenham and Leicester following City, so a result is needed for the Red Devils’ top-four bid.
A game of similar magnitude is between Liverpool and West Ham. Liverpool, with a game in hand, trails City by six points for the league lead. West Ham, without a game in hand, trails United by two points. Liverpool’s run of form is something to be admired of late, but West Ham always plays up, or down, to their opponents.
Looking at the other end of the table, tensions are high for a pair of clubs that are, unexpectedly, in the relegation scrap. Everton and Leeds, which both finished in the top half of the table a season ago, are just one and two points above the relegation zone, respectively.
Leeds takes on an up-and-down Leicester team at the King Power, while Everton travels to London to face a wildly inconsistent Tottenham on Monday.
NBC Coverage this weekend
With the games fairly spread out, there are a number of studio programs for EPL fans to follow this weekend. As usual, Premier League Mornings gets you set on Saturday and Sunday before the 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. kickoffs.
Then, Premier League Live precedes the other fixtures, before Goal Zone wraps up each day’s action.
Fortunately, with five games scheduled in the 10 a.m. window on Saturday, Goal Rush returns to Peacock. This whip-around style tends to follow one game, but dips in and out of the other games happening to show goals and major moments.

And that’s that, 2:30 on the dot the Peacock blackout kicks in even though there’s no pre-game by Comcast. Well, it was a very good half hour and here I hoped the new Peacock President might be more customer-oriented. Only 6 more years of little disappointments.

In case anyone is wondering where the NBC shoulder programming is by Comcast/USA/Peacock pre-game for Tottenham v. Everton there is none. What is very nice, though, is Matchday Live on the Peacock Premier League channel started at 2pm EST and is not blacked out yet.

It could be worse. Here in Seattle we suffer Kasey Keller doing color on Sounders matches. He is so bad. Never shuts up. But worse is he calls all Sounders players by their first names only showing off he is their pal. Illustrates the problem of commentators being on the home team payroll. . Worse still, espn plus blocks their feed of the game when local fox cover it meaning we suffer Kasey despite paying for espn plus. Worst ever was when Arlo White and Kellar were once the Sounders commentary team.

It’s not fair because everyone should get a fair hearing, but I cringe whenever I hear an American commentator when I was expecting a British one. I don’t enjoy Casey Keller but I would take him over Twellman or Wynalda (who is so arrogant and entirely takes over the broadcast) if I had that unhappy choice.

Why they use Pien Meulensteen is a mystery because she is a horrible commenter. The voice sends you nuts just like the “Nails on a chalkboard’ quote..
On a side note : Why do games come through with the crowd noise turned down ????? Give us the atmosphere !!!!!!

It’s strange—Pien Meulensteen as a presenter has a very pleasant voice (as well as doing an excellent job). As a commentator she effects this horrible, grating, low-pitched “announcer’s voice” that is almost Carney-esque. Why?

Drury is technically good but absolute marmite in terms of his style—either loved or hated. I find that in the lesser games he is less over the top verbally and not too bad to listen to. The bigger the game the deeper he goes into his cheesy “football poet” routine and the more I loathe it. It’s all so rote: “blue and red don’t mix”, “ancient, tribal rivalries are renewed”—wth Jon Champion the commentary is fresh and enhance the game without making it all about the commentator. Many love Drury’s routine, so be it.
