EPL Commentators on NBC: April 8 to April 10

Premier League fans circled this game on the calendar months ago. Manchester City versus Liverpool. Even though both sides have eight games remaining including this fixture, the winner is in the driver’s seat for the Premier League title.

Liverpool and Manchester City have been so dominant in the Premier League this year. While just one point separates these top two sides, there is a 13-point gap between Liverpool and third-place Chelsea.

As of now, both sides control their destiny. Whichever side wins this game has the inside track. Meanwhile, the loser would need its rival to drop points over the final seven games. In the event of a draw, Manchester City’s one-point lead would be the buffer between the two.

Manchester City-Liverpool will take the headlines, but there are other games to keep an eye on in the Premier League. Burnley’s defeat of Everton midweek made the relegation battle much more intense entering the final stretch.

Everton hosts Manchester United with both sides desperate for points. Everton’s struggles have the Toffees on the verge of relegation for the first time since 1951. On the other hand, Manchester United is on the verge of missing out on European competition. It is a massive failure of a season for two sides that finished in the top-half of the table a season ago.

Watford and Leeds are also entrenched in the relegation scrap with Everton. Positive results from Jesse Marsch’s side have Leeds on the verge of escape. Roy Hodgson’s Watford are certainly underdogs to survive.

NBC Coverage

The clash at the Etihad is by far the biggest game in this season’s Premier League. To commemorate the coverage, NBC is sending its crew out to England for pitchside coverage of the weekend’s games.

Starting on Friday, Rebecca Lowe, Tim Howard and Robbie Earle will host an hourlong pregame show from St. James’ Park at 2 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Lowe, Howard and Robbie Mustoe are live from Villa Park. Premier League Mornings precedes Manchester United against Everton.

Finally, on Sunday, the four-man crew travels to the Etihad for the usual studio shows.

Goal Rush returns for the usual Saturday at 10 a.m. window. There are just three games on the docket for that time, but viewers will not miss a single key moment. That is exclusively on Peacock Premium.

Two of the games this weekend will be viewable in 4K resolution, regardless of provider that you use. Saturday’s Everton vs. Manchester United Game is in 4K. Then, unsurprisingly, Manchester City against Liverpool can also be watched in 4K.

    Strange, no Arlo on Liverpool-City.

Arlo White was calling the game on USA Network. NBC’s 4K broadcast of the same game had Peter Drury as the lead commentator.

Thankfully I have the Telemundo option if Arlo’s assault on the senses becomes too much for Man City/Liverpool.

Pien Muelensteen is so irritating that you have to put the sound on mute to watch the game. Can’t speak at a normal level. Has to shout all the time. Get rid of her. In fact, get rid of all the woman commentators. Karen Carney is the worst.

Who was on the Paramount+ feed for Benfica/Liverpool last week? Heard the co commentator referred to as Karen so maybe the Karen Carney everyone complains about here? The lead commentator would not shut up and became annoying quickly.

If they’re the ones who get complaints here every week I can understand. FWIW, also found the commentators on Villarreal/Bayern awful too. One of them making simple mistakes all match (saying a corner was won when ball obviously went out the side. Saying that goal was allowed as the keeper was taking the free kick at the spot of the offside after review, etc)

JP. I’m not sure who it was, but she sounded like a fishwife. I switched over to Galavision and enjoyed the game.

I always switch to spanish also or turn the sound off when she does the commentary. It is bloody awful especially as I live in Hawaii and the games start at 1.30am at the moment and the last thing you need at that time of day is to listen to her or Pien Meulensteen !

A triple play of Arlo is cruel and unusual punishment by the NBC overlords. Any fool can print out six pages of google stats and spout them instead of real commentary. Who is his mentor at NBC HQ, his father in law ?

The Swansea match has a much better atmosphere than any of the EPL going on now. Better narration, louder crowd noises. I think that either NBC or EPL are not my cup of tea, I do not know who is at fault here.

Pien Meulensteen is fingernails on the chalkboard.
Agree with Lovie that Rebecca Lowe is good–and, as MarkB states, this is not a gender thing–it’s just that Meulensteen is irritating and talks too much.

Once again we agree 100% John .

I thought I was the only one that Arlo drove friggin crazy! I’m honored to be part of the No Arlo Team.
    P.S. I love Rebecca Lowe.

Lovie, I agree 100% regarding Rebecca Lowe. I remember watching her and James Richardson way back in Setanta days. She has a very pleasant voice, definitely isn’t hard on the eyes and ,most importantly, she knows her stuff. I’ve often wondered how she would be as lead on live matches. Pretty sure she’d be better than Arlo.

What are the NBC bosses thinking? Arlo White three times in one weekend!!!!!! The guy never shuts up and always spends the first 10 minutes ploughing through his prepared statistics. A commentator is supposed to enhance our viewing experience. If I want radio, then I’ll listen to it, but his non-stop verbal blather is an annoying distraction from what our eyes are watching. The atmosphere is destroyed.

Thank god I shall not be watching Arsenal vs Brighton ………………….No Pien Meulensteen this week …………………

      April 8, 2022 at 2:56 pm

Agreed. It’s not a gender thing with me, it’s just that she’s very annoying and not particularly competent. Unfortunately there’s also an Arlo tripleheader. We could really use an atmosphere button, where we could still get the crowd and atmosphere, and mute Arlo’s diarrhea of the mouth.

Man, I would love to have the option of just hearing natural sounds. Every league should have it. It is not only that I dislike certain commentators (which I certainly do), but depending on the day, I just want whoever is narrating/commentating to shut up and let me enjoy the game.
