Just two games in, there is already a certain air around certain clubs in the English top flight. Liverpool’s two draws has them a quick four points back of Manchester City and Arsenal. Those two clubs are the only clubs with two wins through two. However, plenty of teams have high moments over the first two matchdays.
Spurs and Chelsea sit on four points after a heated draw at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle and Brighton picked up a win in matchday one before failing to find a difference-maker in their matchday two fixture. Finally, Brentford is tied for the best goal differential after ripping apart Manchester United, 4-0.
Manchester United’s dreadful start to the season does not get any easier. The Red Devils are back at home, which can be good. However, the team they face is a Liverpool side that is likely frustrated with its opening two games. Worse off for United, Liverpool won both the previous two encounters at Old Trafford by a combined score of 9-2.
Other notable games this weekend include Leeds United against Chelsea. There is certainly a hefty helping of American intrigue with this game. However, with Christian Pulisic’s name on the transfer rumor mill, could it be his last game for the Blues?
A quietly interesting game to keep an eye on is that between Newcastle and Manchester City. Newcastle cannot compete with Manchester City’s talent, but the Magpies are a dark horse for European qualification this season.
NBC coverage this weekend
Rebecca Lowe takes her normal seat behind the NBC desk this weekend. Alongside her are Robbie Mustoe and Tim Howard. The trio are responsible for Premier League Morning, Premier League Live and Goal Zone at the end of each day’s games.
Goal Rush is also back for the third-straight week to start the season. The whip-around style show focuses on one game, but provides all the goals and major moments from the other grounds in a certain timeslot. This weekend, it is the Saturday at 10 a.m. window, with the highlighted game being Leicester City against Southampton.
Certain Premier League games are also available in 4K each matchday. For matchday three, those games are Tottenham hosting Wolves on Saturday at 7:30 in the morning. On Sunday, the 11:30 a.m. kickoff between Newcastle and Manchester City is also in 4K.

The dislike towards Drury is primarily from an American audience that is bathed in the American way of doing commentary. Drury is WILDLY popular for his poetic intros in Europe. Especially his champions league commentaries are legendary.

Exactly right. Some of the fun of watching the EPL from here in the US is that it is a storied, foreign league, and setting the scene, introducing the conflicts in a “poetic” way suits it well, as I see it.
Not sure what Fox plans for commentary for the World Cup, but assuming it will be lots of their usual American voices, many not even at the stadiums, it will be a disappointment

I was disappointed with the performance of Peter Drury in the Man United-Liverpool game. His comments seemed more scripted than usual and were beyond “flowery.” He must stay up late thinking of all the “majestic” word images he can paint. A professional announcer does not draw attention to himself by the words he uses, but should enhance the game’s atmosphere and experience for the viewer.
It was also obvious to me that he was heavy in the corner for Man Utd, practically urging them on. Thankfully, Lee Dixon was in the booth to counter Drury and his pompous prose.

Sometimes Drury is enjoyable to listen to, and sometimes his verbosity grates on the nerves. I still prefer him to Arlo’s sugared up 10 year old style and “Arlogasms” or Tyler’s sleep inducing drone.

100% agreement on Pein’s leather-lung assault. I think the women who do studio work (with the exception of Kate “I love myself” Abdo) contribute a lot on game days, so this is not a sexist point of view. But Pien is being shoved in our ears for one reason only.

Wish they’d sort the sound out.
All during the pre-game (and commercials) there is a great, proper, full-speaker surround sound.
As soon as the game starts (i.e. Leeds v Chelsea on USA right now) all that disappears and we are left with just single, front speaker sound.
Result being is that the sound of the crowd is low. On a good broadcast you get that all filling your room – really adds to it. Not on USA. Is this deliberate so that we have less chance of hearing an offensive chant? If so – pathetic.

I understand NBC wants to prop up Peacock, but what can be so important on USA Monday that the Liverpool/ Man U match has to be streaming only? An SVU marathon?

Upside: Not having Martin Tyler’s sleep inducing drone on Monday. I don’t dislike him at all, but I think his time has passed. He just sounds so disinterested.The downside, of course, is Meulensteen and unfortunately Everton v Forest isn’t available on Universo.

I enjoy Drury, and the second weekend I thought his back & forth with Dixon and Le Saux was more comfortable and even humorous. He obviously knows his stuff, has a real talent for the live call and the bigger picture. Not sure how he’s trying too hard- so far I think he’s mostly been in shirtsleeves and tieless on camera (heat wave)

I like Drury’s call, but I don’t like his obvious scripted lines to open the match. Some are trite and a bit corny. He did this before being promoted to the top spot, so it is not just nerves or pressure to perform.

Huuuuuge upgrade over Arlo. Allows the visuals to speak for the game, doesn’t overload with useless stats, keeps the unrelated story-telling from Dixon or Le Seaux to a minimum. Yeah, the openings are a bit overwrought and self-consciously poetic (as are some goal calls) but I’ve always liked him better than most other lead commentators.
Jim Proudfoot and Gary Taphouse are probably my next two faves. Most of the rest are interchangable, bland, but not bad. I don’t mind Mulensteen like some here do.
Agree on Tyler, his time might be done.
Among co-comms, Jim Beglin and Andy Townshend stand out.
