EPL commentators on NBC: August 13 to 15

Matchday one in the Premier League was great. Underdogs Brighton, Fulham and Bournemouth pulled off strong results to start their seasons.

Three of the most impressive performances, however, came from the usual suspects. Arsenal kicked off its season with a comfortable win at Selhurst Park. Erling Haaland bagged a brace in his Premier League debut to the surprise of no one. Finally, Tottenham bludgeoned Southampton, 4-1, without Harry Kane or Son Heung-Min appearing on the scoresheet.

Fortunately, matchday two also brings some top-tier talent to television. Arsenal hosts Leicester in a quietly intriguing fixture. The Foxes threw away a two-goal advantage at home to Brentford to draw with the Bees. Meanwhile, Arsenal looks hungry for success after just one game.

On the topic of Brentford, many eyes are on their game against Manchester United. A dismal performance at Old Trafford spelled defeat to start Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United. With new transfers coming in and rumors still swirling about departure, the early microscope looms for the Dutchman in charge.

However interesting those games are, they lack the star power and significance of the Sunday finale on USA Network. Chelsea, which finished third a season ago, hosts Tottenham, perhaps the favorite to finish third this season. Antonio Conte returns to Stamford Bridge wielding a team rife with talent and desire. Tottenham sits at the top of the table (based off goal differential from matchday one), and Chelsea rolled out a win of their own.

Coverage this weekend

For the weekend’s schedule, NBC’s studio host is Rebecca Lowe. Joining Lowe on Saturday and Sunday are Tim Howard and Robbie Earle. Earle is the only analyst staying for Monday, as Cara Banks hosts with Danny Higginbotham joining as the other analyst.

The Goal Rush whip-around show returns during the 10 a.m. window on Saturday. Watch the goals and highlights from the five games during that time slot as they happen across the grounds. Goal Rush is available exclusively through Peacock.

Also, there are 2 games in 4K this weekend. They are Brentford against Manchester United on Saturday and, of course, Chelsea-Spurs on Sunday. You can watch the Premier League in 4K if you have the right subscription service and a device to support 4K viewership.

Did not enjoy Conor McNamara on Forest v West Ham…. Way to overheated

    • SteveK

      August 14, 2022 at 3:31 pm

Interesting, I had a completely different takeaway RJB, thought the game was very exciting and found McNamara and Beglin enhanced it.

He was so biased (pro Forest), it was sickening.

Does this mean Peter Drury will not commentate in any EPL game 4 world feed?

    • Christopher Harris

      August 14, 2022 at 8:56 am

Correct. All of his Premier League games are for NBC Sports in the United States only.

Since the EPL are no longer bullying their players to kneel every match, I thought I’d tune in today, just to hear if this Pien Meulensteen is as bad as I’ve been reading here. Yeah, she might be the female version of Arlo White. Nope, I’m not listening to that.

You are incorrect, on the Saturday 3pm matches (and basically all non-live games) Sky employ the commentators for their Match Choice programme, and PLP take the feed.

This has been the case since 2004, and will be the case until 2025.

Premier League Productions only crews commentary teams directly for UK live matches, and the odd, special occasion game otherwise (Manchester United v Newcastle, Liverpool v Aston Villa last season for example).

    • Christopher Harris

      August 13, 2022 at 1:34 pm

Thanks Ron. I guess for those of us in the States, it’s hard to tell because none of the 3PM games are shown live on TV in the United Kingdom. So, if true, that’s interesting and I didn’t know that.

      • SteveK

        August 14, 2022 at 7:51 am

So for those of us playing along at home that means Sky, and hence Comcast, willingly chose Pien Meulensteen on the Man City Bournemouth game, a game they do not show live in the UK because all 3pm games are blacked out in the UK, just so they have commentary when they pull clips and highlights on their highlights show Match Choice.

And we in the US benefit from that Sky hire because we see all of the 3pm games live.

Forest is officially back over the moon.Going to be a great Sunday.

      COYRS!!

    August 13, 2022 at 11:52 am

Pien and Warnock together, was there any dead air ? And, who dressed Scott Parker, his mum ?

  6. Greg

    August 13, 2022 at 7:19 am

Not happy I will have to watch Man City / Bournemouth on mute. Pien is the worst commentator I have ever heard. What is wrong with these female commentators? They always have to yell. Unbearable. Get rid off all of them.

    • John

      August 13, 2022 at 8:44 am

Sometimes when I’m not loving the tv commentary I’ll listen to BBC radio 5 Live sports coverage, which generally reports every goal on Saturdays. Mark Chapman is a great and funny host. Their live call-in show “606” with Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton after matches are over on weekend days is a lot of fun too.

      • SteveK

        August 13, 2022 at 12:03 pm

Don’t forget Talksport as well, they are doing commentary for a lot of PL games this year, and have their own reporters in all the grounds for updates.

  7. Jim

    August 13, 2022 at 4:37 am

Apparently Pien and Karen Carney will no longer be paired for broadcasts as the timbre of their voices peeled the paint off the studio walls.

  8. David

    August 12, 2022 at 10:02 pm

The 4K transmissions, at least on DirecTV, usually have the world feed commentators. I always chose them last season to avoid having Arvo anxiety.

I’m pleased to see WST is now giving us the details of which games are in 4K; could you please list those commentators alongside the ones for NBC/Peacock.

    • David

      August 12, 2022 at 10:06 pm

Of course I meant “Arlo” !!

Pien…. The problem when diversity overcomes talent

    • MarkB

      August 12, 2022 at 9:03 pm

True. Not that there was any “talent” to begin with, other than the “talent” to annoy.

    • John Culea

      August 12, 2022 at 11:07 pm

      Spot on comment.

  10. John

    August 12, 2022 at 6:07 pm

Yeah, and it took me a while to understand this—NBC Sports / USA / Peacock doesn’t employ or choose the broadcast booth teams for most matches they carry. Only two or three featured games each weekend will be be called by their exclusive voices, Peter and Lee and/or Graeam. The other matches are called by the “world feed” commentators, chosen and employed by the EPL. The cost of having literally every match available live in the US, I guess, is that the network paying billions for that takes the feed for many of them as provided by the league itself

  11. John Culea

    August 12, 2022 at 4:45 pm

Volume will be turned down to avoid irreparable damage from Pien. What a wretched prospect that awaits me tomorrow morning.

    • Tony

      August 12, 2022 at 9:15 pm

I feel your pain John………Watch on Universo to eliminate the probability of irreparable damage.

      • David

        August 14, 2022 at 8:22 pm

I watched to see if all the adverse comments about Pien are accurate. THEY ARE. Absolutely appalling screamer. And having Warnock with her doesn’t help. He too generates non-stop, high decibel, verbal diarrhea. What a dreadful combination.

  12. Will

    August 12, 2022 at 3:54 pm

Or I guess to avoid pien, just watch goal rush on peacock I’m sure it’ll be the feature game and it’ll have the international feed commentators

  13. Ron

    August 12, 2022 at 3:07 pm

Andy Townsend is at Villa with Daniel Mann, not Matt Holland who is doing Brentford v Manchester Unitef with Jim Proudfoot

  14. MarkB

    August 12, 2022 at 1:22 pm

It’s bad enough being subjected to “the cure for insomnia” Tyler, but now Meulensteen “the screeching banshee” What next, hiring Gus Johnson and Max Bretos ?

  15. Tony

    August 12, 2022 at 12:46 pm

    She’s back………………………….Pien Meulensteen……………………Sorry Man City vs Bournemouth viewers 🙁

    • MarkB

      August 12, 2022 at 1:16 pm

Universo it is then. I was hoping that NBC had realized their error last season, but apparently not.

      • Nosferatu

        August 12, 2022 at 10:02 pm

Blame Premier League Productions, not NBC. The Peacock just takes the feed from them for the great majority of their games.

        • Ron

          August 13, 2022 at 12:04 pm

Sky Sports crew the commentary teams that you hear on the 3pm games, Premier League Productions take what they are given

          • Christopher Harris

            August 13, 2022 at 12:11 pm

Not true. The Sky Sports commentaries are UK-specific only, while the announcers on the Premier League Productions are on the world-feed.

            • David

              August 14, 2022 at 8:18 pm

So, Chris, please list the world feed commentators ahead of time, if possible, particularly as they rarely credit them onscreen.
